The Chrysalis Den is a ritualistic display of life as seen through the eyes of love and loss, spirit and materials, darkness and hope. Through a lost ceremonial procession, a spirit is unveiled in a modern time founded on concrete and steel. An orange soaked sun dies to give birth to a desire to erase sweet memories wrapped in sting. And everything is relative to the next … in the grass, around hearts, through the animals and inside women, the wind, the water, and moon … when life is so beautiful it hurts. Within The Chrysalis Den we take time to exhibit hearts.

Any moment of our life has the potential to become a meditative space, an inhabited site for pure experience. However, in our society of inter connectivity and multitasking, most of these spaces are never unlocked for their full, singular capacity. “breathe.” invites you to pause and remember that our lives are made up of a series of single breathes thus connecting ourselves more closely to one another and to our shared culture. The exhibition features works by Angie Wilson, Gloria Tanchelev, Justin Young, Llewelynn O. Fletcher, Ben Shaffer and Fatima Hoang, Amir Nikravan and Luke Gilford that offer opportunities for silence, introspection and ultimately restoration.

Everything is Beautiful

New works by René Garcia, Jr. and Liz Miller at Project One.

Project One presents Everything is Beautiful, a dynamic exhibition of flashy new works by San Francisco artists René Garcia, Jr. and Liz Miller, opening December 2, 2009 through January 10, 2010. Everything is Beautiful explores the means by which we pursue gratification. René and Liz build on established Pop aesthetics to create provocative works that challenge and delight. While René and Liz are clearly kindred colleagues at the forefront of their own artistic movement, Everything is Beautiful marks the first occasion where their work will be seen together.

René Garcia, Jr., whose bodacious glitter paintings have become fixtures in the Project 1 lounge, returns to the main gallery with several new amusements. Employing a heavy dose of optimism and a penchant for badassery, René exploits proven gimmicks in an earnest attempt dazzle. In a culture where reproduction is easy and accessible, René makes meticulously handcrafted work that is deliberately unique by design. His new works will include paintings, sculpture, and things that light up.

By recontextualizing and playfully subverting cliches and archetypes, Liz Miller’s multimedia work explores the means through which to inspire, stimulate and entertain the mainstream.  She deals with subject matter which is recognizable and easy to like to create an intense dialogue between content and context.  Themes such as commodity, celebrity, food and even pets produce a humorous dialogue about consumption, excess and paradox. Her captivating, thought provoking images and objects are produced with sincerity but not lacking in irony. She will be exhibiting photographic pieces from the series “Clarity” as well as a video and sculptural installation at Project One.

We are proud to announce the release of the new Hawke album +++, written and produced by Gavin Hardkiss.

As an alternative to having songs remixed, Gavin asked visual artists to create paintings, sculptures, videos and mixed media inspired by the album and join him to create an art event to celebrate the album’s release.

Fifteen artists from the Bay Area and beyond will have work featured at the event. Artists include Felipe Merida, Fernando Apodaca, John Stewart, Handiedan, Duser, Ursula X. Young, Justin Young, Pure Evil, Owen Maigret, Robert Ogden, Evan Venegas, Trina Merry, Lucian Moon, Breejock, Joe B and Dmitri SFC.

There will also be several nights of DJ entertainment featuring Gavin Hardkiss and cohorts, with fashion, food, photoboof and general tomfoolery.
